It can be difficult to know where to get great sushi, especially if you’re new to the community, or new to the food. Sushi originated in Japan, turning fish into somewhat of an art form. With the delicate presentations and pristine tastes, it’s easy to understand why sushi is now a popular food in most cultures. However, finding your favorite spot can be a challenge, as each sushi restaurant is different. The Best Raw Bar in Town

If you’re new to the sushi world, the terminology can be quite confusing. One of the most popular terms you’ll hear is Maki. Maki essentially means roll. In the United States, this is one of the most popular standard rolls, containing fish, veggies, and wrapped in rice. Hosomaki is another roll, which is simply thinner. The ingredients in Hosomaki are generally limited to two, using items such as cucumbers or salmon. Then, there are thicker rolls, called Futomaki. Instead of being made with only a few ingredients, this allows for more space to add multiple types of fillings.

There are also rolls that don’t really look like rolls at all. An example of this would be a Temaki roll. Instead of being wrapped in rice, these are wrapped in the traditional Nori sheets, rolled into cone shapes. Another roll that has not been covered in rice is the Gunkan. Instead of being covered in rice, the rice is found inside, also wrapped safely in Nori sheets. To add a bit of extra flavor, fish eggs are generally placed on top.

If rolls aren’t something you’re into, there’s always the more straightforward approach, such as fish without all of the extra flavors. This allows the pallet to really savor the flavors of the raw fish as is, without the extra distractions. Nigiri and Sashimi are two of the most popular ways to eat fish. Nigiri is a thin piece of fish placed on top of a hand-rolled ball of rice. The fish may be raw, or it may not, but this generally depends on the type. Sashimi on the other hand, requires no rice. It is simply thinly sliced fish, presented solo.

There are many other sushi basics, such as complimenting side flavorings like ginger or wasabi. Both generally come on the side of these plates. Wasabi adds quite the kick, while ginger is meant to be used as a pallet cleanser.
